The UK aviation industry has announced plans to become more environmentally friendly and reduce aircraft noise.

Following claims that the aviation industry is a major contributor to pollution and climate change, the industry has promised reform in a report entitled Sustainable Aviation.

The report promises to reduce and monitor fuel emissions and aims to halve the "perceived external noise" of aircrafts by 2020.

For those staying in airport accommodation, quieter aeroplanes could mean an even better night's sleep prior to departure.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said of the new initiative: "I am delighted that such a wide range of organisations have worked together on Sustainable Aviation."
