It's been a busy time for hotels, as new figures show that business travel bookings increased during the first nine months of the year.

Overall, hotel reservations rose by nearly a quarter (24.7 per cent), while in another part of the tourism industry, flight sales and rail bookings also saw an increase, according to figures from the Guild of Travel Management Companies (GTMC).

However, at an increase of eight per cent, rail and flight bookings did not rise at the same pace as hotel bookings.

GTMC's Philip Carlisle told TravelMole that the figures were 'immensely significant'.

He added: 'The disproportionately high growth in hotel bookings show that business travellers are packing more into each trip, following multiple business leads in different destinations, in the course of one extended journey.'

In total, 1.99 million hotel bookings were made from January 2005 to October.
