A new hotel and spa is getting ready to open near Bath by Christmas next year. The £30 million five-star establishment hopes to lure travelers to its historic premises with the promise of TV chef Martin Blunos as well as with free pick-ups from Bristol International Airport.

Plans have already been submitted to local authorities to allow for the transformation of the historic Bailbrook House in Batheaston into a 130-room hotel. When complete, the facility should have the capacity to host conferences with up to 200 people.

Planned facilities include a 60-seat cinema, 20-acres of grounds, a restaurant, a basement spa, a dance studio and a gymnasium.

A complete renovation of the mansion is planned in order to transform the rooms into something more "stylish and sympathetic".

Hilwood Resorts and Hotels bought the property in February 2007 and have been working hard on their plans. Gregor Ritchie, the co-founder of Hilwood, researched the plans by staying in five-star resorts in the area.

"I have stayed in the hotels that will be our direct competitors and I know they do a good job. We will be offering a truly luxury hotel at Bailbrook House. We want this to be the hotel of choice in the area. What we found interesting about this project is the opportunity to create something that complements the existing structure. The new building was thrown together in the 1970s and 1980s and doesn't blend in."

When the hotel opens, it will create 100 full time positions in the area.
