A new report has shown Edinburgh hotel properties to be the most profitable in the United Kingdom.

The news comes via a recent report from business travel firm PKF, which said that hotels in the Scottish capital are currently making more money than any other UK properties, thanks largely to the recent riots in London and consumers’ efforts to save money by avoiding holidays abroad.

Figures from the month of August showed that rooms in Edinburgh had an average ‘yield’ of £108.53 – the highest figure in Britain including the capital and almost twice typical rates seen in Glasgow and Aberdeen.

PKF analysts said that London’s riots scared off a significant number of travellers, driving many to Edinburgh. Additionally, the group said that the ‘staycation’ trend is benefitting the city as are high oil prices, which increases business travel traffic into the region.

Alongside higher rates, Edinburgh also saw higher occupancy figures in August than elsewhere in the UK. Occupancy across the whole of Scotland rose to 87.8 per cent for the month, an increase of 3.2 per cent on the same time in 2010, whilst London saw a drop of 0.1 per cent to 82.1 per cent despite a 3.5 per cent rise seen in the whole of England.
