The news came during the grand opening ceremony for the new InterContinental Moscow Tverskaya, which marked the firm’s return to the country after an absence spanning nearly a decade. The new St Petersburg property is to be developed with the help of Russian construction firm Petersburg City, a VTB Development subsidiary, with a target opening of sometime in 2016, IHG said.

According to IHG officials, the forthcoming property will boast an intriguing trapezoid shape housing 159 guest rooms in addition to 13 deluxe suites and a single presidential suite. It will also feature café outlets both on the rooftop and the ground floor as well as a main restaurant capable of holding 140 diners, in addition to an exclusive spa and health club overlooking the city lights from the upper floors of the building.

The site for the property is situated about 30 minutes from Pulkovo Airport, close to Peteropavlovskaya Fortress, the Winter Palace and only five minutes from the Sportivnaya metro station.

The move comes as InterContinental says it will remain committed to expanding its presence in Russia in the effort of targeting a market with a shortage of international brand name properties.
