The British Airports Authority, operating firm of the west London gateway, said on Tuesday that the major structural work had been finished on the new terminal and that the event would be marked soon with a topping out ceremony. The facility is slated to open its doors in 2014, according to officials.

The £2.5 billion upgrade for the Busiest airport in Europe comes as part of a larger £4.3 billion program that seeks to enable Heathrow to host an additional 20 million passengers per year.

BAA chief Colin Matthews said to reporters that the completion of the primary structure put the airport within reaching distance of an era in which Heathrow offers some of the best airport facilities in all of Europe. However, he added that there was still a significant amount of work to be done.

Likewise, transport secretary Justine Greening called Terminal 2 a “success story” for the British construction industry, saying it will offer state-of-the-art British quality and materials. She went on to say that the upgrade was part of Britain’s ongoing effort to improve passengers’ overall experience.
