Reports said the domestic tourism campaign will offer discounts of 20.12 per cent off at a number of participating businesses including hotels, restaurants, tour companies and attraction operators.

The scheme, which will be funded via the UK tourism industry, is to be launched on Wednesday by culture secretary Jeremy Hunt and will put in excess of three million discounted hotel rooms up for grabs, officials said.

Mr Hunt said in a statement that 2012 was the ideal year to holiday in the United Kingdom thanks to the Olympics as well as the Diamond Jubilee, noting that with the 20.12 per cent discount that now is a great time to check out what the UK has to offer.

The program will offer bookings via a dedicated website and will feature a £3 million television advert promotional campaign. However, numerous local businesses whose revenues depend on overseas holidays have called the effort a “scandalous waste of money”.

VisitEngland has said it hopes the ‘holidays at home are great’ program will create around 12,000 jobs in Britain via the generation of an extra 5.3 million in overnight breaks. The tourism body said its target figure would bring an additional £480 million to the industry over the course of the next three years.
