The news came via a press release issued on Thursday, which also said that the company would be adding 11 new properties in the remainder of 2012, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region to meet the area’s rapidly growing demand.

Westin properties set to open in the West this year will kick-off in hot destinations like New York, Panama City and Snowmass, Colorado, officials said.

Simon Turner, global development president for Westin’s parent firm, Starwood Hotel’s and Resorts, said that the hotel brand has emerged as a leader in the global market and that its recent surge had been propelled by growth in Asia-Pacific. He added that Westin had become the “brand to beat” over the past 10 years despite the fact that it has a footprint only a third the size of its competitors.

The firm also said on Wednesday that it would be ramping up growth in Latin America as well; the chain has doubled its presence in the region in just the last year and a half. In addition to the new facility in Panama, the brand features properties in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Peru.
