InterContinental Hotels Group has announced plans to open its first-ever flagship-brand property in the Thai holiday island of Phuket.

According to an official press release, bosses from the UK-based hotel conglomerate have signed a deal with local firm JTM (Thailand) Ltd., which will see the construction of the upscale InterContinental Phuket Rawai Beach Resort.

The facility’s design comes via architect Bill Bensley, whose award-winning skills were utilised in designing some of the brand’s other properties in the region, including the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam. Bensely’s design for Phuket will make use of the former facilities of the Evason Phuket and Bon Island resorts; the IHG property is slated to open in 2014.

Kelvin Lum, managing director for LC Dev, the parent firm of JTM Ltd., said in a statement that the signing of the InterContinental Phuket Rawai Beach Resort would enhance his company’s two-decade relationship with IHG. He added that IHG is the “ideal” operator for the new property and the group's second Thailand hotel alongside the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket Patong.

Similarly, IHG chief executive for Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Jan Smits, said that his firm was “delighted” team up with JTM and LC Dev to further develop IHG’s presence Phuket.
