London-based hotel conglomerate InterCotinental Hotels Group (IHG) is to increase its presence near US military bases.

According to Travel Weekly report published on Monday, the firm is preparing to add 18 of its flagship Holiday Inn properties near American military centres; the move will bring the company’s total number of Holiday Inn military-area hotels to 39.

Current military locations include Fort Hood (Texas), Fort Hamilton (Brooklyn, NY) and Presido of Monterey (California). The expansion will bring the total number of available military-area guest rooms to more than 11,000.

Moreover, IHG officials said this week that the company is also preparing expand its Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites brand into military markets in the coming years as IHG continues its role as the exclusive provider for the US Privatization of Army Lodging scheme.

The news comes just after the firm posted disappointing figures for the first quarter of the year, which according to officials came largely as a result of an early Easter holiday as well as slowing sales in the lucrative Chinese market.
