Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, has been voted the best city in the UK in a new league table.

The Daily Telegraph polled 25,000 people to discover the nation's favourite getaway spots, and Edinburgh fended off competition from places such as London, Bath and York.

Getting around the UK has never been easier or cheaper, as more low-cost airlines launch budget flights around the UK.

Taking a hotel room can also be convenient and an easy way to save money.

Most airport hotels run park and fly packages, where they will provide guests with free parking for the duration of their holiday when they book one nights' hotel accommodation.

So customers can drive to the airport at their leisure, with no worry about missing a flight, and then park up and relax before the holiday.

Edinburgh received its award in a London ceremony at the Royal Opera House, reports the Scotsman.

Paris, who won the best city award back in 1998 when the awards were first launched, did not feature this year.
