Anyone flying out of London Heathrow airport or Edinburgh airport may very well be heading for New Zealand, a new survey has shown.

Readers of the Daily Telegraph named New Zealand as their second favourite tourist destination for the second year in a row, ahead of South Africa and Australia.

It now seems that people flying out from London Heathrow, Edinburgh or any other UK airport seem to want to travel that bit further, with Italy the only European destination in the top ten.

The Telegraph explained that whereas its readers were once perfectly content to holiday in Europe, they have now begun to broaden their horizons.

'Affection for New Zealand owes much to the spectacular box office success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was filmed there, but also to greater accessibility,' it added.

Meanwhile, Cape Town has retained its position as the readers' favourite city to visit, having last year become the first non-European city to claim that honour.

Sydney finished second, while Venice was the only European city in the top seven.
