The new property will feature 160 guest rooms and suites and also 85 serviced apartments. In addition to a selection of restaurants and bars, the super-deluxe hotel will also boast a rooftop cocktail lounge.

The Glasgow hotel would be Jumeirah’s fifth in Europe, and the only property in the UK outside of London.

Ian Simpson Architects are responsible for the design and Progress Property Developments will oversee the construction of the hotel.

Glasgow City Council’s leader, Steven Purcell, said: "Today's announcement is a resounding vote of confidence in Glasgow and its future ambitions.

"This is made all the sweeter by the fact that Jumeirah does not operate anywhere else in the United Kingdom outside London."

The Independent’s travel editor, Simon Calder, commented that the hotel would transform the skyline and also the image of Glasgow.

"The fact that the Jumeirah group have chosen to put Glasgow with London, New York and Shanghai as one of the locations for a new hotel speaks volumes for the city," Calder added.

“It's also going to create a new dimension to Glasgow and Edinburgh's relationship - Edinburgh will certainly be looking to see how they can respond to it, maybe by going for the elusive seven-star hotel.”
