At 1800 GMT on Monday, the celebrations begin, as the parade leaves from the City Chambers. In the words of the organizers of the festivities, it continues along the Royal Mile, creating a "river of fire".

As the parade comes to an end, a huge Lion Rampant will be set alight at the top of Calton Hill, as pipes and drums play and fireworks light up the sky over the capital.

Three more days of festivities are set to follow, leading up to the annual concert and Hogmanay street party. Tuesday will see a celebration of both modern and traditional dance from around the world, in the Grassmarket.

What is billed as the best celebration of the New Year in the world is expected to attract more than 100,000 revellers, who will take to the streets of Edinburgh on Hogmanay.

The city’s massive street party will be held in conjunction with the annual Concert in the Park – this year featuring Groove Armada and Paulo Nutini.

On New Year’s Day, the celebrations finally come to an end with the traditional South Queensbury Loony Dook.
