Famous as the birthplace of the bard William Shakespeare, many British residents would be surprised to hear Stratford-upon-Avon described as a top tourist destination. However, the town recently beat towns such as San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, Honfleur in France and Ireland’s Donegal to win the title of the most charming town in the world.

Recently, travel website Tripadvisor asked visitors to the site to vote for their favourite travel destinations. Several million people cast their votes, which were divided into a number of different categories.

The survey asked voters to think about factors such as local food and restaurants, the quality of the hotels and accommodation, and ease of parking.

"This is a great accolade for Stratford-upon-Avon to be voted the most charming town in the world,” Phil Hackett, chief executive of Shakespeare Country tourism commented in the Telegraph recently."As the reviews are written by real travellers, the accolade is completely impartial and one that I feel is very much deserved for the town."

Despite the fact that Britain was overlooked in terms of the best beaches, weather and adventure tourism, it seems that the UK is full of charm.
