Officials from the travel guide publisher said that the historic London borough was recognised thanks to its persistence in reinventing itself since coming on to the world stage as a navy hub in the 18th century.

The honour comes just over nine months out from the London 2012 Olympics, when Greenwich will become a key centre for the games. The borough is slated to hold basketball, trampoline and artistic gymnastic events, whilst Greenwich’s royal park, one of the oldest in Britain, will hold modern pentathlon, equestrian events and shooting. Greenwich is also set to become one of the United Kingdom’s royal boroughs in 2012.

Frommer’s judges also made note of renowned baroque architecture throughout Greenwich, some of which is the product of greats such as Sir John Vanbrugh, Christopher Wren and Nichola Hawksmoor, and also raved about the borough's excellent views overlooking of Canary Wharf from the park.

Other destinations comprising Frommer’s must-see top 10 include Girona in Spain, the Yucatan Peninsula on Mexico’s Caribbean coast and Beirut, the Lebanese capital. Additional mentions included Fukuoka in Japan, Curacao, Ghana and the Bay of Fundy, which stretches along the coastline of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada.
