The mid-sized airport took the prize for category of Best Regional UK Airport as well as the 2011 UK Airport of the Year, marking the facility’s third and fourth award recognitions in just three months.

The news came in London at the Battersea Evolution during the Gala Awards Dinner, which had more than 1,000 travel industry professionals in attendance. East Midlands took the top regional prize among 13 other airports including Leeds Bradford, Belfast City and Newcastle, and beat out a total of 17 major airports for the Airport of the Year Award; among other contenders were Gatwick, Heathrow and Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport.

East Midlands airport managing director Brad Miller said during the ceremony that his facility was ‘truly honoured’ to receive the award and thanked the airport’s customers for being at the heart of the organisation. He said airport staff would continue to invest in a positive experience for customers and that it had been an exciting year for the facility.

Lorraine Barnes Burton, chief executive of the British Travel Awards said that East Midlands was to be congratulated after taking the top prize among ‘fierce’ competition.

The event also coincided with the grand opening of the Radisson Blu Hotel at East Midlands Airport.
