Atkins is currently the company’s managing director for its MAG Developments arm, which is preparing for its upcoming market search for partners for developments associated with the Airport City project.

The Airport City scheme is set to develop some 4 million square feet of space for various businesses over the next decade and a half. The group says the project will include retail space, hotels, leisure facilities, as well as logistics and manufacturing firms.

An in-depth report detailing available opportunities is set to be released in early 2012 as the project's competitive sales process is set into motion. Manchester Airports Group says the scheme will enable Manchester to compete with similar projects in Amsterdam, Barcelona and Frankfurt.

Atkins said in a statement that Manchester is a well-served location in terms of transport links and close-by developable land assets. He added that 2012 will be a “significant” year for the project as opportunities are brought to the market.

The Airport City project was originally unveiled in March as part of Government efforts to promote enterprise zones. Firms operating within the Manchester Airport Zone within the first five years of opening will receive discount rates and other benefits.
