The property, which previously featured the official name of The Las Vegas Hilton hotel-casino, announced this week that it’s new name will be void of the Hilton title: The Las Vegas Hotel & Casino.

Situated east of The Strip, the hotel is a landmark property for Las Vegas and was the site of more than 800 sold out performances by Elvis Presley. The name change is not the first for the casino resort; it was first opened as the International Hotel in the late 1960s by billionaire Kirk Kerkorian before it was bought by Hilton and renamed in 1971.

But the establishment moved to end its contract last year amid financial turmoil after defaulting in 2010 on a $252 million loan, forcing it to make payments with operational expenses for three months in 2011 while it sought to restructure its debts.

History professor Michael Green from the College of Southern Nevada said that although it’s uncommon for Vegas hotel-casinos to change names that it wasn’t unheard of, noting the shift to Planet Hollywood by the Aladdin as well as the original MGM Grand becoming Bally's.

Along with the change, Hilton loyalty program members will no longer be able to collect or accrue points at the property.
