A Newcastle hotel property has drawn fire from some after replacing Gideon Bible’s with the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

Reports said last week that Damson Dene hotel manager Wayne Bartholomew had raised eyebrows by swapping out the Bible for the erotic work, which Bartholomew says many people are too shy to buy for themselves. He said this includes men, who he said are also “desperate” to get their hands on it.

Bartholomew is also the star the first ‘The Hotel’ on Channel 4.

However, Christian groups have since called on the hotel to return the Bible to guest rooms, despite operators’ moves to promote the property as a romantic getaway. However, Bartholomew said in a statement that the Gideon Bible is still on offer at the reception counter for guests that request it.

The move has also prompted an eruption of chatter from thousands of ‘friends’ on the property’s Facebook page.

Fifty Shades of Grey is currently selling some 1 million hard copies and ebooks per week and in total has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Author E.L. James has reportedly netted some £862,069 in sales from the work.
