Londonderry’s City Hotel will soon expand amid plans to cater to a larger amount of international travellers.

The announcement came on Monday via Northern Ireland’s enterprise minister Arlene Foster, who said that the £500,000 effort comes as the region continues to prepare itself for its upcoming role as the UK’s 2013 City of Culture. Foster said that such scheme would help Derry and surrounding areas to capitalise on the demand created by the event.

Officials from the property said that the effort would see 12 new luxury suites and other facilities added to its existing 146 guest rooms in order to attract new visitors from North America and continental Europe. The project is slated for completion before the end of the year, according to officials.

Invest NI is helping to fund the upgrade to the renowned four-star property; officials from Invest NI said the organisation has put some £70,000 toward the effort.

City Hotel general manager Ciaran O’Neill said in a statement that the move comes on the heels of ten successful years of market leadership following the property’s launch in 2002. He added that the aid provided by Invest NI would help the organisation to take advantage of the upcoming opportunities brought about by next year’s UK City of Culture title.
