Hotel giant InterContinental is amid plans to open 190 new hotels in India over the next few years.

Officials from InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) said in a press release issued last week that the company is “aggressively” working to expand its Indian portfolio as part of the company’s overall growth strategy.

Tony Chawla, IHG’s key account director for group global sales, said that demand for hotels was rapidly growing in the South Asian country. However Mr Chawla did not provide investment details for the strategy, noting that IHG works with owners and leasers on a franchise basis.

Currently IHG offers only 12 hotels in India. The group said that the new additions would include a variety of different IHG brand names, primarily midrange names such as Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

Additional InterContinental Brands include Hotel Indigo, Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza, Staybridge Suites and its flagship InterContinental Hotels properties. The firm currently has nearly 3,900 franchise hotels around the globe, about 650 of which are operated by the firm and 10 of which are wholly owned by the group.
