Low-cost hotel chain Premier Inn has launched its new property in Shrewsbury.

Reports said on Wednesday that the new 136-bedroom facility on Smithfield Road has officially launched operations, with its first ever guests showing up to check-in just after 2pm. Likewise, the property’s restaurant officially opened its doors for business at around 5pm.

The move comes following a £9 million construction effort where the Telephone House once stood. The project began in February of last year, just a few months after the company was given the official green light from local officials.

Meanwhile, Premier Inn officials said that the property’s launch has brought 46 new jobs to the local economy following a job fair held at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn in January in which more than 700 people showed up.

According to the Shropshire Star, staff members from the new hotel have helped to raise almost £600 for regional charity efforts. The funds will be sent to Shropshire Young Carers as well as to the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The news comes on the same day that Premier Inn announced that it would create 500 new apprenticeships within the next few years.
