Hotel conglomerate Hilton is to introduce its Waldorf Astoria brand in the Indian market.

The news comes via a report published this week by The Hindu news agency, in which Hilton’s vice president of Indian operations Guy Hutchinson said in an interview that Hilton International is now on “equal footing” with its competitors in the regional market. He said that this would allow the firm to move forward with ambitious expansion plans, noting that Hilton now has the second-biggest pipeline of new hotel properties for the Asia-Pacific region.

Hilton expects to be trading 17 hotels in India by the end of 2013 and the firm will likely need to expand the number of rooms available in its mid-market brands as well, Hutchinson told the paper.

In addition to bringing the iconic Waldorf Astoria to the South Asian country, Mr Hutchinson said that there are also growth plans for Hilton luxury chain Conrad, noting that contracts are already in place for new properties in Mumbai and Bengalaru.
